Curriculum Engagement Programs
The past two years have seen an exciting evolution of the NAF curriculum. Together with the Pearson Foundation and corporate partners such as Ernst & Young, Citigroup, and American Express, NAF has developed 15 new courses that contain extensive lesson plans, student resources, and teacher resources. Nine new courses will be released at the 2009 NAF Annual Institute for Staff Development in Phoenix, AZ (See www.naf.org for more details).
NAF and the Pearson Foundation have developed three different programs to support the writing, ongoing development, and implementation of the NAF curriculum: Curriculum Fellows, Curriculum Leaders, and Curriculum Innovators. NAF teachers interested in leadership opportunities within the network can participate in these programs, each of which receives active oversight and support from NAF and the Pearson Foundation. The programs are designed so that the experience gained in one leadership role continues be developed by participating in successive programs. The NAF community benefits from harnessing this building of expertise.
In addition, online discussion groups provide NAF network members with an opportunity to share their reactions, suggestions, and concerns about the courses. The editors and curriculum development team receive this feedback and use it to improve the courses and keep them current.
How NAF Network Members are Already Involved
NAF-Pearson Curriculum Fellows
- During the 2007-2008 school year, 45 dedicated teachers from the NAF network piloted new courses for AOF, AOIT, and AOHT. The Fellows received training and provided detailed input that led to revisions of six courses. They met in Chicago, New Orleans, and Orlando to share their expertise and experience with the new curriculum.
- This year, a new group of Fellows have been selected to pilot nine courses. They will be meeting in Denver, New Orleans, and at the Institute in Phoenix.
NAF-Pearson Curriculum Leaders
- Six of last year’s Fellows have agreed to support their colleagues across the country in implementing new NAF courses.
- These outstanding teachers are experts in the following NAF courses: Advanced Finance, Financial Planning, Principles of Information Technology, Digital Video & Digital Media, Principles of Hospitality & Tourism, and Geography & World Cultures.
- These Curriculum Leaders met in Berkeley, California, to design online training and support programs for NAF teachers using our new materials, all at no additional cost to participating Academies.
- Check the next NAF Connections for scheduled course webinars and email support.
NAF Instructional Experts
- NAF creates new courses with the advice and guidance of NAF teachers with proven expertise in the course content. This year, nine teachers will be working with our curriculum writers and editors. They will be teamed with industry professionals to help create the new course materials that will be piloted in 2009–2010.
Coming Activation Programs
In 2009, NAF and Pearson will officially launch two new engagement opportunities for NAF network members:
NAF–Pearson Curriculum Ambassadors
- Many of you may need additional information and orientation to determine how you might introduce the new NAF curriculum in your Academies. Curriculum Ambassadors, selected from last year’s Curriculum Fellows, will fulfill the important role of providing this guidance.
- Curriculum Ambassadors will host Curriculum Information Sessions in various regions and provide face–to–face contact and support in these settings. Like Curriculum Leaders, they will alsol be available online to answerquestions and provide valuable feedback to NAF.
NAF-Pearson Curriculum Innovators
- NAF recognizes that many of you have been creatively teaching career courses for many years and have wonderful ideas that could benefit the wider Network. We want to capture these proven activities and teaching practices and make them available to the rest of the NAF Network.
- NAF and the Pearson Foundation will announce grants for teachers who want to provide great ideas for use across the country. See the next edition of NAF Connections for application information.
As ever, your advice is always valued. Please feel free to contact NAF with comments or questions about the curriculum at arothstein@naf.org or laura@naf.org.
