People use social media daily for personal, business and professional networking. There are many sites to choose from and worth the time to open and use an account. What I do is make a printed copy of all the accounts I have and put them in a tickle file to ensure consistent use. Or you can use a free version of HootSuite that will allow you to post to many sites at one time. Social Networking sites can give you access to people based on a niche or common interest. Some will allow you to advertise much like AdWords or AdBrite. When you sign-up be sure to go to the page that explains how to use it, set up your members area right then. Bookmark the site and you are ready to use. You can figure out when to use it later.

It is an excellent way to establish your expertise and get your website in front of others. There are Social Networking forums for academics, marketers, affiliates and techie, to list just a few of the thousands of communities. Blogging is perhaps as popular as Twitter and Facebook.
